Interesting Facts

Street Names with a Story: Many roads in Knowle West, such as Leinster Avenue and Downton Road, were named after places in southern Ireland and the west of England—reflecting the heritage of early residents and the housing development’s roots in the 1930s.

Industrial Legacy: The site of the Inns Court estate was once home to market gardens and the grand Inns Court House, demolished in the 1930s; hidden remnants of its walled gardens still survive in green spaces today.

TV and Media Connections: The Channel 4 soap opera “Family Affairs” used Knowle West as inspiration, and the area has been a location for several British TV dramas due to its classic postwar streetscape.

Pioneering Community Projects: Knowle West Media Centre is a nationally recognized catalyst for digital creativity, having pioneered projects like UK’s first 3D-printed housing pods and community-led filmmaking workshops since the 1990s.
